How to Kill the Compiler (WIP)

Boss mechanics, damage phases, and what your squad needs to take down Cryo Archive's biggest threat — updating as we learn more

MarathonMeta·March 20, 2026

///Overview

The Compiler is the boss encounter inside of Vault 7 of Cryo Archive — the first true boss fight in Marathon. It's a multi-phase encounter that requires coordination, target priority, and the right loadout. Do not go in blind.
This guide covers the full fight mechanics in order. If your squad knows this flow, you'll clear it. If you don't, you'll burn through self-res and wipe.

///Phase 1 — Terminals, Orbs & Frozen Ground

This is where coordination matters. There are a bunch of Link Terminals spread around the arena. The terminals are frozen and unusable until you clear the ground around them.
⬗ DESTROY GREEN CONTAINERS TO UNFREEZE TERMINALS
Green containers spawn near the Link Terminals. Destroy them to remove the frozen effect from the ground. You must clear the freeze before you can interact with the terminals. These containers will continue to respawn throughout the fight, so stay on top of them.
⬗ MATCH 3 SYMBOLS ON THE LINK TERMINALS
Once unfrozen, your squad needs to press the correct 3 terminals that display the same symbol. This is a matching puzzle — communicate which symbols you see and activate the 3 that match simultaneously.
⬗ SHOOT THE GREEN ORB PROJECTILES
While working the terminals, the Compiler fires green orb projectiles at your squad. These explode on impact and will kill you if you ignore them. You need at least one dedicated player whose job is shooting down incoming orbs while the rest handle terminals.
⬗ AVOID THE COMPILER'S LASER
The Compiler will target players with a laser beam. Break line of sight immediately — get behind cover. Don't try to tank it.
TIPAssign roles before you start: one player on orb duty, the rest calling out and pressing terminal symbols. Trying to do both at once gets people killed.

///Phase 2 — Damage Phase

After completing the terminal puzzle, a green container will spawn with a green bubble around it.
⬗ STAND IN THE GREEN ORB
Step into the green bubble to trigger the damage phase. The Compiler will open up its center — this is your window.
⬗ UNLOAD ON THE COMPILER'S CORE
Once the core is exposed, dump everything you have into it. This is a limited window so make every shot count. High-DPS weapons are essential here.
After the damage window closes, you'll cycle back to the terminal phase. Repeat until the Compiler is dead.

///Loadout Recommendations

This fight punishes squads that come unprepared. Here's what you should bring:
⬗ SELF-REVIVES — BRING PLENTY
This is non-negotiable. You will go down, especially while learning the fight. Every squad member should have multiple self-res items.
⬗ BUBBLE SHIELDS
Strongly recommended. Bubble shields give you safe cover during the terminal phase when orbs and lasers are both active. Pop one if your team is getting overwhelmed.
⬗ HIGH-DPS WEAPONS
The damage window on the Compiler's core is short. Bring your hardest-hitting weapons — you want to maximize damage in every phase.
⬗ DEDICATED ORB SHOOTER LOADOUT
The player on orb duty needs a weapon with fast target acquisition and good accuracy at medium range. They need to be able to snap to incoming projectiles quickly and consistently.

///Compiler Rewards

The Compiler drops a Compiler Ganglion on death — a Contraband Eccentric Salvage item worth 8,000 credits. The Ganglion can be exchanged at the CyberAcme Market for Hyphatic Gel (Prestige ammo material).

///Quick Reference

Destroy green containers to unfreeze Link Terminals → Match 3 same-symbol terminals → Shoot green orb projectiles before they explode → Break LoS from Compiler's laser → Stand in green bubble to start damage phase → Shoot the exposed core → Repeat until dead.
One player on orbs. Everyone else on terminals and DPS. Bring self-res and bubble shields. Don't panic.

///Loot Room — Post-Compiler Rewards

When the Compiler is downed, a second door opens leading to the loot room. This is where the real payoff is.
⬗ COMPILER GANGLION
The Compiler drops a Compiler Ganglion on death — a Contraband Eccentric Salvage item worth 8,000 credits. The Ganglion can be exchanged at the CyberAcme Market for Hyphatic Gel (Prestige ammo material).
⬗ PRESTIGE LOOT
The loot room contains tons of Prestige-tier items including implants, mods, and salvage.
⬗ CONTRABAND WEAPONS
The Biotoxic Disinjector — a hybrid human/alien weapon with grenade and beam fire modes — can be found in the Cryo Archive.
⬗ SECURITY CLEARANCE 5 DOOR
Behind the main loot is an additional room locked behind a Security Clearance Level 5 door. Acquiring Level 5 clearance requires completing objectives within Cryo Archive during the same run.
