Ranked Mode — Everything You Need to Know

How Ranked works, the rank ladder, Holotags, score targets, and rewards

MarathonMeta·March 17, 2026·Updated Mar 18

///What Is Ranked?

Ranked is Marathon's competitive mode, designed to test everything you've learned — looting, PvP, and strategic risk-taking. You earn Ranked Points (RP) by exfilling with loot that meets or exceeds your crew's score target, which is set by the Holotags your team brings in.
You must be Runner Level 25 to queue for Ranked. Ranked is currently in beta for Season 1 — Bungie is actively collecting feedback to shape its development.
Ranked is only available on weekends. Each weekend features a different zone: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, or Outpost. Check which zone is active before planning your loadout.

///Ranks & Subdivisions

There are six ranks in the Ranked ladder: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Pinnacle.
Within each rank there are three tiers — 3, 2, and 1 — with 3 being the lowest and 1 being the highest within that rank (e.g. Bronze 3 → Bronze 2 → Bronze 1 → Silver 3...).
At the end of the season, you lock in rewards based on the highest rank you achieved — your final standing doesn't matter. Bungie won't punish you for continuing to play after peaking.
TIPYou keep your season-peak rewards even if you drop ranks afterward. Play aggressively once you've hit a tier you're happy with.

///Low Stakes vs. High Stakes

When queuing for Ranked you choose between two separate matchmaking pools:
Low Stakes (Ranked) requires a minimum gear ante of 3,000 credits and a Bronze Holotag or higher. This is roughly the equivalent of a full set of Enhanced gear with a few Deluxe pieces. All crew sizes are matched together — solo or full squad.
High Stakes (Ranked+) requires a minimum gear ante of 10,000 credits and a Platinum Holotag or higher. This is roughly a full set of Deluxe gear with a few Superior pieces. The first weekend of Ranked only has Low Stakes available.
The gear ante is the minimum credit value of your equipped gear — it ensures everyone in the match has something meaningful on the line.
TIPThe 3,000 ante is achievable early on. The 10,000 ante for High Stakes is a real gear check — you need to be running Deluxe/Superior loadouts consistently before queuing.

///Holotags — Your Entry Pass & Score Multiplier

Every Runner must carry a Holotag in their backpack to queue for Ranked. Holotags are purchased with credits in the Armory, or looted from enemy Runners you defeat. You can only purchase up to your current rank tier — a Gold-ranked player can buy Gold, Silver, and Bronze tags, but not Platinum.
Holotags set two critical values for your run: your score target (the loot value you need to exfil with) and your loss penalty (the RP you lose if you die). Here's the full breakdown:
Bronze: costs 500 · score target 3,000 · loss penalty 600 · overperformance cap 600
Silver: costs 750 · score target 5,000 · loss penalty 2,000 · overperformance cap 1,000
Gold: costs 1,000 · score target 7,000 · loss penalty 4,200 · overperformance cap 1,500
Platinum: costs 1,500 · score target 10,000 · loss penalty 8,000 · overperformance cap 2,250
Diamond: costs 2,000 · score target 15,000 · loss penalty 15,000 · overperformance cap 3,250
Pinnacle: costs 3,500 · score target 20,000 · loss penalty 20,000 · overperformance cap 5,000
Holotags persist after exfil — you can re-use them on your next run or sell them for full value.
TIPStealing a Holotag from a downed enemy Runner is massive — it adds to your overperformance capacity, meaning you can earn bonus RP beyond your normal score target.

///How Scoring Works

Your crew's score target is set by combining your team's Holotag values. Loot you find in-run counts toward your score based on its credit value — ammo, consumables, and your starting loadout do not count.
Once your crew hits the score target, exfil to earn RP. If you exfil before hitting the target, no RP is gained and your rank doesn't change. If you die without exfilling, you lose RP equal to your team's combined loss penalty.
Overperformance capacity lets you earn bonus RP past your normal score target. You start each run at zero overperformance capacity. You can increase it by looting enemy Runner Holotags or collecting Tag Chips — items that drop from UESC enemies and in-run events.
Tag Chips: value 250 credits · overperformance cap +400 · max stack 5
Polished Tag Chips: value 700 credits · overperformance cap +1,000 · max stack 3
Tag Chips auto-sell on exfil — you don't need to manually cash them in.
TIPTag Chips are double value — they count toward your score target AND add overperformance capacity. Prioritize UESC kills and event objectives to farm them.

///Season Rewards

Each time you earn a new rank during the season you receive a loot package containing gear and room keys for randomly selected zones. At season end, your highest rank earned determines your cosmetic rewards:
Silver: Player Background
Gold: Destroyer Runner Shell Style, Title
Platinum: Gun Style
Diamond: Gun Style
Pinnacle: Gun Style, Title
All participants receive a Ranked emblem matching their peak rank. Some rewards are granted immediately while others are delivered at the start of the next season.

///Tips for Climbing

Ranked rewards consistent, efficient play over hero runs. Match your Holotag tier to your loadout quality — bringing a Pinnacle tag with marginal gear means you'll rarely hit your score target and bleed RP on deaths.
Coordinate with your squad on when to exfil. Once your loot meter hits the score target, leaving immediately is almost always correct. Greed kills ranked runs.
Tag Chips from UESC enemies and map events are high priority — they count toward your score AND raise your overperformance ceiling, so they're worth going out of your way for.
Check the active zone each weekend before queuing. Each zone has different loot routes and enemy density, so your loadout and route planning should adapt accordingly.
TIPAt Diamond and Pinnacle tiers, the loss penalty equals or exceeds the score target. A single failed exfil can erase multiple successful runs. Play conservative once you've filled your loot meter.
