Squad Composition Guide

How to build a balanced 3-player squad using Runner synergies

///Why Composition Matters

Marathon squads are capped at three players. That's not a lot of room for redundancy - every shell choice needs to pull its weight. A squad of three Assassins might be fun for ambushes, but you'll have zero healing, zero intel, and no frontline presence when things go sideways.
Good squad composition isn't about following a strict meta. It's about covering your bases: someone who can take hits or hold a position, someone who provides information or disruption, and someone who keeps the squad alive or enables escapes. How you fill those roles depends on your playstyle and the zone you're dropping into.

///The Core Roles

Think of Marathon's shells in three broad categories rather than rigid class roles.
Frontline shells create space and absorb pressure. Destroyer is the obvious pick here - Riot Barricade blocks damage, Search & Destroy missiles overheat targets, and Thruster lets them reposition aggressively. Vandal can also fill this role through sheer disruption, using Disruptor to knock enemies out of cover and Overload to chain movement abilities.
Intel and disruption shells control information. Recon is the purest intel shell - Echo Pulse reveals enemies including invisible ones, Tracker Drone overheats targets, and Stalker Protocol leaves footprint trails on shielded enemies. Thief's X-Ray Visor and Pickpocket Drone also provide valuable reconnaissance, plus the grapple offers unmatched escape routes.
Support shells keep the squad running. Triage is the only dedicated healer - Medic Drone provides sustained healing, Capacitive Gauntlets can revive at range, and Shareware copies consumable effects to droned teammates. No other shell comes close to this level of team sustain.

///Proven Synergies

Certain shell combinations have clear mechanical synergies based on how their abilities interact.
Destroyer and Triage feel like the most natural pairing in the game. Destroyer pushes forward and takes hits while Triage keeps them alive from behind with Medic Drone and Shareware. Triage's Battery Overcharge also adds EMP to battery weapons, giving the pair both sustain and crowd control. On paper, this duo looks like the backbone of a balanced squad.
Recon and Assassin create a cat-and-mouse dynamic. Recon's Echo Pulse directly counters Assassin's stealth, which means having your own Recon protects your squad against enemy Assassins while your own Assassin can exploit the intel Recon generates. Stalker Protocol's footprint trails also feed perfectly into Assassin's ambush playstyle - you know exactly where the target ran.
Vandal and Thief pair mobility with loot acquisition. Vandal's Overload-powered movement chains clear paths and create chaos while Thief's X-Ray Visor identifies what's worth grabbing. Thief's grapple also provides an emergency exit that Vandal's raw speed can keep pace with.

///Recommended Squad Compositions

Here are three squad compositions that cover different playstyles, built from the synergies above.
The Balanced Squad: Destroyer, Triage, and Recon. On paper, this looks like the safest all-around composition. Destroyer holds the frontline, Triage heals, and Recon provides intel and counter-stealth. You've got sustain, durability, and awareness covered. This squad excels at holding extraction points and surviving long runs. The likely weakness is limited mobility - you probably won't be outrunning anyone.
The Aggro Squad: Destroyer, Vandal, and Assassin. This should play as a kill squad. Destroyer and Vandal push together creating overwhelming pressure while Assassin flanks from smoke and camo. You trade healing and intel for raw combat power and mobility. Best for players who want to hunt other Runners rather than avoid them. The risk is obvious - no healer likely means mistakes are punished hard.
The Loot Squad: Triage, Thief, and Recon. This composition prioritizes extraction value over combat dominance. Thief finds the best loot with X-Ray Visor, Recon keeps the squad aware of threats, and Triage keeps everyone alive long enough to extract. Thief's Backpack Scaling means they get stronger as the run goes on, and Recon's intel helps the squad avoid fights they don't need to take. The likely downside is low burst damage - if a Destroyer pushes into you, you'd be relying on positioning and escape tools rather than firepower.

These compositions are starting points, not gospel. The Server Slam will reveal what actually works in practice. Pay attention to what kills you and what keeps you alive - that's better data than any theory.

///What About Rook?

Rook is the solo scavenger frame - it doesn't participate in squad play. Rook drops into matches already in progress, alone, with no loadout and no squad slots. Other players aren't notified when a Rook joins.
You can't bring a Rook into a squad, and you can't squad up as Rook. It's a completely separate gameplay experience designed for zero-risk loot runs and map learning. If your squadmates are offline, Rook is how you stay productive without risking your vault.

///Communication Is the Real Meta

No composition works without communication. Marathon is a game where the player who has more information wins. A squad of three off-meta shells with voice comms will consistently outperform a "perfect" composition where nobody talks.
If you're using our LFG system, you can filter for squads that require or prefer voice chat. You can also use the built-in tactical map to plan routes and mark objectives before you even drop in - and the squad voice chat to coordinate during runs.
Call out enemy positions, share what you're seeing on the map, coordinate ability usage. A Recon who spots enemies but doesn't call them out is wasting their entire kit. A Triage who doesn't know their Destroyer is pushing is going to lose them. Talk to each other.
