Understanding Factions

What each faction wants, who runs them, and why it matters for your progression

MarathonMeta·February 24, 2026

///How Factions Work

Marathon has seven factions operating on Tau Ceti IV, each with their own handler, contracts, reputation track, and vendor inventory. Factions are how you progress outside of raw looting - completing their contracts earns reputation, and higher reputation unlocks better gear from their vendors.
You're not locked to one faction. You can accept contracts from any faction before a run, and you can build reputation with all of them simultaneously. That said, each faction rewards different playstyles, so you'll naturally gravitate toward whichever ones match how you play.
Every faction posts contracts - mission objectives you can accept before dropping in. These range from killing specific enemies to retrieving items or reaching certain locations.
TIP

Accept contracts from multiple factions before each run. If a contract aligns with where you're already headed, that's free reputation you'd be leaving on the table otherwise.

///UESC - The Bureaucracy

The United Earth Space Council is the governing body that originally launched the Marathon colony ship to Tau Ceti IV. They're the establishment - or what's left of it. Their authority collapsed over a century ago, but their automated directives and supply caches still litter the planet.
UESC contracts read like bureaucratic cleanup operations: recover classified records, audit data, tie up loose ends from a colony that failed under unclear circumstances. They're also the faction whose AI enemies patrol every zone, so you'll be dealing with UESC whether you work for them or not.
UESC is a solid starting faction because their contracts tend to involve exploration and data retrieval rather than high-risk PvP objectives. If you want to learn the maps while earning reputation, UESC is a natural fit.

///Arachne - The Death Cult

Arachne is the most combat-oriented faction in Marathon. They're obsessed with violence as a system - a way of measuring who deserves to survive. Their handler is Charter, and their contracts demand Runner eliminations, kill streaks, and presence in the most dangerous zones on the planet.
Arachne doesn't build, sustain, or negotiate. Their contracts are straightforward: kill things, prove you're dangerous, collect your reward. If you're the kind of player who drops in looking for PvP fights, Arachne is your faction.
The trade-off is risk. Arachne contracts push you toward engagements that other factions would tell you to avoid. Their rewards reflect that - they cater to aggressive, combat-first playstyles.

///CyberAcme - The Tech Corporation

CyberAcme Systems is responsible for the cybernetic infrastructure that makes the Runner system possible - the technology that transfers human consciousness into Runner shells. Their handler is Oni, a coldly efficient AI that manages day-to-day operations.
CyberAcme contracts focus on diagnostics, system audits, and resource collection to keep their networks running.
If you want your kit to feel smarter rather than deadlier, CyberAcme is a natural fit. Their philosophy is optimization over firepower - making systems work better rather than hitting harder.

///NuCaloric - The Explorers

NuCaloric Agricultural presents itself as the faction that feeds and supplies humanity. As major stakeholders in the original Marathon colony, their contracts focus on exploration, resource gathering, and uncovering what happened to the expedition over a century ago.
Their handler, Gaius, frames the corporation as a caretaker, but NuCaloric's contracts consistently push you toward investigation and lost records - suggesting they know more about the colony's failure than they're letting on.
NuCaloric rewards Runners who understand routes, positioning, and terrain. They're the faction for players who win fights by knowing the map better than their opponents rather than by having the biggest gun.

///Sekiguchi - The Biologists

Sekiguchi Genetics created the Weaveform technology used to build the shell bodies Runners inhabit. Where CyberAcme handles the digital side of consciousness transfer, Sekiguchi handles the biological - pushing human bodies past their limits for survival in harsh environments.
Their representative is Nona, described as a white, winged insect-like figure with red eyes and multiple arms. Sekiguchi contracts focus on retrieval, experimentation, and endurance in the most punishing zones.
Of all the factions, Sekiguchi feels the most archaeological. They seem genuinely interested in understanding what Tau Ceti IV was, not just exploiting it. If you prefer endurance and attrition over quick kills, Sekiguchi's philosophy aligns with that mindset.

///Traxus - The Arms Dealer

Traxus OffWorld Industries is the richest and most powerful corporation in Marathon's universe. Their handler, Vulcan, oversees the flow of gear and materials across Tau Ceti IV. Traxus contracts focus on recovering high-value assets - weapons, mods, and equipment scattered across the battlefield.
Traxus represents classic ambition: the belief that something game-changing still lies beyond the danger. They reward boldness and push Runners toward the most valuable targets on the planet.
In the broader Marathon timeline, the Traxus name carries weight - Traxus-class AIs were among the most powerful constructs ever built. On the ground, Traxus is the faction for players who want the best gear and are willing to take risks to get it.

///MIDA - The Revolutionaries

MIDA began as a revolutionary movement born from the collapse of the Martian economy, fighting against the UESC's neglect of its colonies. What started as political resistance evolved into something far more radical. On Tau Ceti IV, MIDA focuses on sabotage, disruption, and digital warfare.
Their handler, Gantry, communicates in fragmented, almost subversive transmissions. MIDA contracts involve destroying enemy assets, uploading malware, and ensuring that if they can't control the situation, nobody else can either.
MIDA has been formally absorbed by Traxus, but younger members reject the arrangement and see their elders as sellouts. MIDA is the chaos faction - for players who enjoy disruption, explosives, and making things difficult for everyone else on the map.

///Choosing Your Factions

You don't need to pick a main faction early. The smartest approach is to accept contracts from whoever has objectives that align with where you're already going. Over time, you'll naturally build more reputation with the factions that match your playstyle.
A rough guide: if you chase PvP kills, Arachne and MIDA will reward that. If you're methodical and exploratory, UESC and NuCaloric are your best fit. If you want practical gear upgrades that improve your efficiency, CyberAcme and Sekiguchi are the move. If you want the highest-tier loot and don't mind risk, Traxus is calling.
Keep in mind that faction vendors sell different inventories. As your reputation grows, you'll unlock access to gear that's exclusive to each faction. Spreading your reputation across multiple factions gives you more options when building loadouts.
TIP

During the Server Slam, focus on naturally completing contracts rather than grinding one faction. You'll get a feel for which factions match your style before committing at launch.
